紐西蘭大學學年於二月末或三月初開學，有一週時間為熟悉環境週，學期於十月份結束。每所大學有自己的時間安排，但通常每學年分成兩個學期，每個學期12個週。每學期中間有兩週的假期，在學年的中間有6週的假期。這些假期不一定都是假日，你可能需要用其中的一些時間進行研究和學習。大多數課程都是「全年」課程，也就是持續兩個學期的課程，但有些課程僅需一個學期。
